It's great if you can get inspiration just from your surroundings, but reading is always going to be the best way. If you aren't reading at least a little bit, you are not going to improve as a writer. Read everything. Read out of your genre, read magazine articles, read non-fiction. Fill your brain with good writing and your writing will improve.
Make a goal for yourself right now to set aside some reading time daily. You won't regret it!! You'd be surprised the ideas that come to you when you're doing something else.
